Kuznyechik has been selected by the Russian Federation as a new GOST cipher, GOST3412-2015. Kuznyechik is a symmetric SPN block cipher with a 256-bit key and a block size of 128 bits. Kuznyechik takes a block of the plaintext and the key as inputs, and applies several alternating rounds consisting of a substitution stage followed by a permutation stage to produce each block of ciphertext output.

Kuznyechik uses the π S-Box, also used by Streebog, and this aspect is currently being scrutinised by cryptographers. VeraCrypt includes Kuznyechik as one of its supported encryption algorithms.
